There are a couple of different ways to create an Apple ID. If you have iTunes loaded on your computer, open it and click "Sign In" in the top right corner of the iTunes window. A text box will open, asking you to sign in and in the bottom left you will see a button entitled "Create Apple ID." Click it and follow the steps to create an Apple ID. You will need to supply an email address to create the Apple ID.
If you have been lucky enough to have had an iPad assigned to you, you can create an Apple ID right from the device. As I mentioned in my last post, the IT Department sets up iPads with a generic Apple ID before we send them out to schools with the expectation that staff who receive the device will then use their own Apple ID's on the iPad. Here are the steps to create an Apple ID directly from the iPad.
The first step is to open the App Store app, which is usually on the first page of apps or in the dock at the bottom of every page. Next find a free app that you would like to download, like Dropbox for example. Tap on the app and a window will open and you will see a box labelled "Free." Tap this box and a green box will appear with the words "Install App." Tap this and a "Sign In" window will appear. In this window choose "Create New Apple ID" and then just follow the steps, making sure that you fill in all the required fields.
You will be asked for your name, address, phone number, etc. and you will be asked to choose some security questions and provide answers to them. Make sure that you record your answers exactly as you have typed them and keep this information somewhere secure. You will be asked to provide it the first time you buy an app. Near the end of the process, you will be asked to choose an option for purchasing apps. The good news is that if you follow this process and have chosen a free app, you can select "None" as your payment option. This avoids the necessity of having to supply credit card information or use an iTunes gift card. (You can choose to use either of these methods later if you wish to but this method allows you to create an Apple ID without tying it to a credit card.)
When you choose "Install App," if the window that opens already has an Apple ID and is asking for a password, then you need to sign out of that account (which could be one of our generic teacher accounts - [email protected] or [email protected].) You sign out by going to the Settings app, scrolling down to "iTunes & App Store," tapping on the Apple ID that is in the top right of the screen, and then choosing "Sign Out."
You can also create an Apple ID in the iTunes and App Store in Settings, but if you choose this method, you will be asked for a credit card. "None" will not appear as one of your purchasing choices.
Of course, Apple also provides information on creating an Apple ID. You can find out more by visiting this website: https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
